„We were both in agreement that protecting the EU’s external borders is of crucial importance and that we must not give up the fundamental principle of our sovereignty. We alone have the right to decide who is allowed to enter our respective countries and with whom we are willing to coexist,“ he said.
He also said that Hungary and Greece shared the position that security challenges facing Europe, including an escalation of crises in Ukraine and the Middle East, must be avoided. „Preventing an escalation in both armed conflicts is of crucial importance to both of us,“ he said.
Meanwhile, Szijjártó said that Greece, like Hungary, was sensitive to respecting the national rights and especially the rights of ethnic Greek communities living outside its borders.
„We were both in agreement that the issue of national minority rights must not be suppressed by claims that they are bilateral issues. Respecting the rights of ethnic minorities is an international legal issue that belongs to the rule of law and therefore must remain on the international agenda,“ he added.
Szijjártó also met with the energy ministers of Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania. He said that energy supply security is of crucial importance. New resources and transport routes must be included, and „it is inevitable that Greece will become a transit country for gas deliveries to Hungary,“ he added.
He welcomed the expansion of the capacity of a gas connection between Bulgaria and Greece from the current 3 billion cubic meters to 5 billion cubic meters next year, adding that this would make Greek LNG ports available.
„For the security of Hungary’s gas supply, new transport routes through Greece can be considered,“ he said.
„The better we are interconnected with neighbors and neighboring areas, the more secure we are in terms of energy supply security,“ he added.
„We have completed a successful visit to Greece and found that new energy routes have been established to serve the security of our energy supply, and we have strengthened our cooperation as allies in matters important to Hungary’s security,“ he said.
