The Arab armies, besieging Istanbul between 672 and 678, used the island as a settlement. The name of the island was changed to Arabs Island in the Ottoman Period due to the Arabs who became Turkish over the years. With the signing of the Exchange Treaty, the Greeks on the island were sent to Greece and the Turks were settled on the island. Since this event, agricultural activities on the island have come to an end.

In the Republican Period, the island was called Türkeli for a short time. After the arrangements made, the island was named Avşa. Avşa Island is one of the important tourism regions today. It has a population of about 2,000 people.

There is Altınkum Bay, very close to Yiğitler Village. Altinkum Bay is one of the places frequented by the tourists who come here. Şahintepesi got this name because the rocks here resemble a hawk. Şahintepesi is also located in Altınkum Bay. There is also a restaurant here.

Karadut Bay is the most popular bay after Altınkum Bay. It has a long beach and two tea gardens close to the beach. Black mulberry bay takes its name from the black mulberry tree located here.

There is a women-only beach on Avşa Island. However, there are no cafes or toilets here.
