Shell Launches First LNG Filling Station in Hungary

Shell Opens First Liquefied Natural Gas Filling Station in Hungary

Shell, the international energy company, has opened the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) filling station in Hungary, which is located in Szigetszentmiklós, near Budapest. The filling station is the first of its kind in the region and is expected to make a significant contribution to Hungary’s emission reduction targets. The minister of foreign affairs and trade, Péter Szijjártó, stressed that the green policy and climate change targets can only be achieved through meaningful measures, and these would be extremely important since transport accounts for about 20% of greenhouse gas emissions, of which 70% is from road transport, and trucks are responsible for two-thirds of this. The use of LNG in road transport can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15-30% compared to standard fuels. This means that the uptake of LNG, especially in road freight transport, is a huge step towards reducing emissions globally. The partnership with Shell is considered strategic from an economic, energy supply, and environmental perspective. The modernized station in Szigetszentmiklós will supply LNG, and in the future, bio-LNG fuel to trucks in Hungary, while also supporting freight traffic to other countries. Shell is continuously expanding its European network of LNG refueling stations to support the carbon reduction efforts of its road freight partners.
