Hungary is one of the safest countries in Europe
Hungary has become one of the safest countries in Europe, according to Bence Rétvári, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior. Speaking at the ten-year anniversary meeting of the National Crime Prevention Council (NBT), Rétvári credited the NBT for its work in creating a safer environment. He also cited the strengthening of the legal system and the police force as well as high levels of employment for contributing to the decline in crime by a third over a decade. Last year, there were only 154,000 known crimes in Hungary, down from 447,000 a decade ago. A French poll revealed that only 4% of people in Hungary feel unsafe compared to 15% in Germany, 20% in Belgium, 24% in France, and 58% in Sweden. Rétvári stated that crime prevention work was also being carried out at national borders as migration has brought organized crime into the country. European crime statistics ranked Switzerland, Iceland, and Slovenia as the safest countries, while France, Sweden, and Belarus were deemed the least safe.
