Jens Stoltenberg was born on March 16, 1959 in Norway. Stoltenberg, the 13th Secretary General of NATO, became Chairman of the Norwegian Workers‘ Party in 2002. From 1985 to 1989 Stoltenberg was President of the Workers‘ Youth League and from 1990 to 1992 the Oslo branch of the Labor Party. He served as prime minister of Norway from 2000-2001 and again from 2005-2013.

He was elected as a deputy in the Oslo elections in 1993 and served in Brundtland’s Council of Ministers as State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment between 1990 and 1991. He served as Minister of Industry from 1993 to 1996. After Brundtland’s resignation in 1996, Thorbjorn Jagland was elected leader of the Labor Party and became Prime Minister. Stoltenberg was appointed Minister of Finance. He served in this position until October 17, 1997, when Jagland and the entire Government resigned. While in opposition in Parliament, he served on standing committees on energy issues. Following a motion of confidence against the first Bondevik Ministers, Stoltenberg was appointed Prime Minister of Norway on 3 March 2000, although he was the Party’s Deputy Chairman, but was not party leader. He was re-elected in 2009 for a second term as Prime Minister, but lost for a third term in 2013.
