TTK moved 360 thousand data to its digital archive, which sheds light on the struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people.

The Turkish Historical Society (TTK) brought digital copies of around 360 thousand data, consisting of thousands of photographs, images and documents in the personal archives of names who had an important place in the history of the Cyprus struggle, to the institution archive.

TTK started an archive work to preserve and transfer the historical documents and visuals of the struggle in the process leading to the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

In this context, Osman Örek, one of the prime ministers and chairman of the parliament of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus (KTFD), Osman Örek, one of the leaders of the Turkish Cypriot people, Necati Özkan, participated in the resistance in the ranks of the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT), served as a member of parliament, the Presidency of the Turkish Cypriot Community Assembly, and the TRNC Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Relevant people or their representatives were contacted for tens of thousands of historical documents belonging to Bozkurt and Faiz Kaymak, who was the president of the Cyprus Turkish Institutions Federation between 1949 and 1957.

Within the scope of the signed protocols, thousands of photographs, documents, documents, images and newspaper copies in the personal archives of these people were scanned and transferred to the digital archive. The originals of the documents were delivered to the representatives of the archive owners.

With the studies carried out in the TRNC and Turkey, 16,450 images of the struggle of the Turkish Cypriot people covering the period 1950-2000 were obtained from Örek’s archive.

With Örek’s television speeches, 36 CDs of 129 GB containing images from the Cyprus Peace Operation were also added to the archive.

In addition, video and audio tapes and microfilms in Örek’s personal archive were brought to Turkey to be used in archival studies.

The digital footage of the newspaper archive, which was donated to the TTK by Necati Ahmet Özkan, was made. 3 thousand 212 images of various newspapers were recorded.

TRNC resident Prof. Dr. 702 books and periodicals and 2 boxes of archive materials were transferred to the TTK library and archive by Mehmet Hacı Şevki. Dr. It was donated through Mehmet Balyemez.

Digital copies of the personal archive consisting of 7 thousand 96 pages of documents belonging to the Cyprus national struggle in İsmail Bozkurt’s personal archive and 2 thousand 312 documents belonging to Faiz Kaymak were also brought to the TTK archive.

Documents added to the archive were made available to users in the institution’s library.

“When history disappears, the nation also disappears”

TTK President Prof. Dr. Birol Çetin told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they have been conducting special studies on Cyprus for more than two years.

Stating that they have collected around 360 thousand digital data so far, Çetin said, “When history disappears, that nation will also disappear. History is very important. The reason why we are working especially in Cyprus is that we have a serious accumulation of struggle in Cyprus. We don’t want that to be forgotten.“ said.

Cetin gave examples of what was brought to the archive, and said that Örek’s archive includes recordings and videos of the negotiations held on international platforms, articles published during the negotiations, as well as newspaper articles.

– “We secure historical sources”

Stating that they added some data to the archive through purchasing and that the documents were transferred to the digital environment after classification, Çetin said, “The archive still remains with its owner. We get a digital copy. Then we give a copy of them to the archive directorate in Cyprus. Therefore, we not only secure these historical materials and sources, but also benefit the owner of the archive.” he said.

Expressing that he can find information about a special issue related to Cyprus or the struggle of TMT and their activities in Cyprus, he can be found in the Turkish Historical Society, Çetin underlined the importance of the work done at the point of independence.

Çetin said that they prepared an interview series titled “The Turkish Cypriot National Struggle with the Narration of the Mujahideen and Mujahideen”, in which they recorded the life stories of the mujahideen, who had an important place in the history of the struggle in Cyprus, within the scope of oral history, and that they aim to complete the work they will do with 70 people who took part in the struggle in the field within a year. added.
