Unopened boxes are filled with us. Each is like secrets we’re afraid to open. Do we have the courage to open the boxes when we get to know someone?“ The new play „Kutular“ by This Production, which has found its place in the world of theater with the motto „Sustainable Art“, starts with this question. We conducted an interview with the author and actress of „Kutular“, Burcu Görek…

„You are betting on a relationship, the bet ends in failure, you move on to another relationship, that also ends in failure: maybe what we lose is not just a simple negative, but the product of what we put forward. In fact, it arouses such a feeling in people. Life is not just addition and subtraction. It is also the accumulation, the product of loss and failure…“ This is what Julian Barnes, one of the leading authors of contemporary English literature (winner of the Man Booker Prize, who also writes detective novels under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh), says in his book „Levels of Life“ (translated by Serdar Rifat Kırkoğlu, published by Ayrıntı Yayınları) Amy Nostbakken and Norah Sadava’s play „Mouthpiece,“ translated into Turkish by Gökçenur Şehirli and directed by Tamer Levent, met with theater lovers in 2022. The creators of „Uyandığımda Sesim Yoktu“ (When I Woke Up My Voice Was Gone), produced by This Production, reminded me of the book „Levels of Life“ which was written by Julian Barnes and questions our personal history and memories can be so ambiguous. In the play, the character talks about not wanting to forget this night, isn’t life just a jumble of what we forget and what we can’t forget!

The team, describing „Kutular“ as „a play about relationships; a journey for the audience to reveal the secrets we are afraid to tell everyone,“ includes Burcu Görek, the author of „Kutular,“ the director Balım Kar, and Semih Değirmenci. The play, with one act and a minimum age limit of 16, features Burcu Görek, Dilara Gül, and Ekrem Can Arslandağ. The set design is by Ilgaz Kasapoğlu, the lighting design is by Selen Çakırhan, and the movement design is by Burcu Brodo. You can watch the play on February 1st at Caddebostan Cultural Center, on February 7th at Ara Sahne, on February 23rd at House of Performance, and on March 22nd at Fişekhane. But before that, take a look at the interview we had with Burcu Görek, the author and actress of „Kutular“!

„Who do I want to share my loneliness with?“

„Resemblance used to be considered unique to art for a long time; especially when countless shows and representations were banned. Nowadays, dissimilarity seems to be the order of the art; especially with the pictures in galleries and museums being replaced by photos, videos, and exhibitions of objects similar to everyday objects,“ says Jacques Ranciere in his book „The Future of the Image,“ and adds: „To be thought, it must be fabricated.“ How does the life we left behind in 2023, in the hustle and bustle of transience, affect your personal and artistic life today?

I live life as a cumulative total of the past, future, and present. I try to develop good, beautiful, and right things within a holistic sense of time and try to navigate with an objective perspective. I want to turn the experiences ot the process that I have lived into a positive transformation. Because one way or another time is passing, and I try to understand what I have experienced, by evaluating all the bitter, sweet experiences and trying to create empathy. Life is not just about addition and subtraction. It’s also a multiplication of loss and failure. I experience life as a cumulative total of past, future, and present. I am someone who tries to approach everything with the question of „Is the dialogue with the real world really successful?“ Somewhere in the book, Julian Barnes asks this question, „Are we really making the choices we want to make?“

Fast-forward to „Kutular“, a glimpse into the lives of three people who come together and whose stories are revealed. It is a collective memory of life, the flux of stories of loneliness, heartache, and longing, the fellings and thoughts of which are portrayed through the characters of Eylül, Ali, and Nice, and through the actions in the play. The time and place of every spoken or unspoken, shared or unshared tale carring and reliving, undergone both in the past and in the present, locate the characters‘ journey on a shared territory of yearning and creativity, vulnerability and resistance to life’s amnesia and forgetfulness. The dawn story gained through admiration and encounters, confusion and conflicts and long-lasting solidarity, lifelines from the social margins as well as the artistic energy from urban chaos and loneliness can direct the story.

The team finds massive potential for the team in each scene’s artistic power regardless of the widespread disrepair and disaster and boredom. The textures of the performance and songs fill all the discomfort and reveal clear depths and glimpse inspiration. The roles are a complete reimagining of characters who have no attachment with the life around them and have an affinity for running on the cyclical and unstoppable chains, temporally detached from themselves and their ordeals. The result of the process of mutual understanding and collectively developed performance is at least a happy and genuine unity. The intensity of the script and characters in the storyboard, in real life, offers an expiration date which will last through the whole performance, the experiences where we share mourning and longing, painful and pleasurable exchanges, in an adventurous manner of the stories fully on stage.

From day one, celebrated actor, director, producer, and screenwriter Tamer Levent, and associate professor of acting at Pervititch Academy, the advisor to the events, met the team and later contributed. The students from different languages provided translations to the best of their abilities. This Production constantly works with different stage directors and uses quite experienced lighting designers and stage decorators. This brand of theatre has grown stronger over the years, and they are consistent in their promotion routes. This was the case with „Uyandığında Sesim Yoktu“.

Seeds of collaboration flourish at the production of any show that confirms the test of time. Following the successful tour of Toronto’s „Mouthpiece“, this team put forward bundles ideas of passion and timeless moments, as they delight in revisiting the pains and privileges of the creative process. Specialising in a life-and-mind-relating speech, one may feel the timeless longing and memorable reflections digitized, because of dealing with the essential, silence and distance in a journey separated by a journey inviting empathy and humor. With an recognizing annunciation drying hands on a cold afternoon, „Kutular“ is an intimate show for each audience. The reflection on the same matter of opening stories and secrets in reinterpretations offers an emotional roadmap, a new gloomy riddle of self-exploring. Potential scenes mention the entire process where all prejudice and oppurtunity must go, because it can showcase the audience and the readers their active feelings scrolled like a roller pick down a crown, the acclaimed carriage of watchful perseverance.

While the subject of relationships questions the characterization of the performance in both poetry and an unwillingness to be happy or sad, „Kutular“ informally revises the play’s condition, where shields for an emotional joy and guidance oh contraries. The tragedy of sad living fits into a metaphoric human condition in a power play of relationships, between a Sunday outing and a skating adventure. In order to spoil sadder and more compelling things, big emotions and romantic moments hurt the working relationship and securing its heartbeat, making it real. It is sad and beautiful living. From giving love and happy loved ones high, „Kutular“ defines that a timeless release feeds into a memory for the audience, who are always seeking new ways to interpret the theater. This influence should give theater a place that has room for distrust and fear and beautiful reward, no matter how painful the truth, no matter how happy. Burdened heart is led adrift like managing loss and guiding inspiring luxury, albeit timeless trust and an obligation to be with people of all types and places, transforming open characters into star players.

The tough challenge offers large scale of important over ground. All will see large scale for „Kutular“‚descelling in the market, projects, and attendant designs.
