In a shocking incident in Paterson, New Jersey, the imam of Omar Mosque, Sayed Al-Nakib, was attacked by a man with a knife during the morning prayer on Sunday, April 9th. The attacker, named Şerif Zorba, who is of Turkish origin, hid in the crowd and jumped over the congregation to stab the 65-year-old imam in the back while he was prostrating.
The attacker was caught by the community and handed over to the police. According to reports, the imam was treated at the Saint Joseph Hospital and is not in danger of life. The suspect, who is said to have come to the USA recently and claimed to be from Istanbul, attended his first hearing from Bergen County Prison and is accused of „carrying an unlicensed weapon and attempting to murder“.
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, it is noteworthy that the chief of police in the region is Turkish, and the senior assistant prosecutor investigating the incident is also of Turkish origin, Bülent Can. The investigation on the subject is ongoing.
