Is the US’s Attitude towards the Cyprus Problem Changing?
Discussions about the political climate on the island of Cyprus continue. Especially recently, there have been allegations that there has been a change in the attitude of the United States of America (USA) towards the Cyprus problem. In this article, we will focus on whether the US stance on the Cyprus issue has changed.
The Cyprus problem has been on the agenda many times throughout history and various attempts have been made for a solution. Disputes between the political structures on the island, the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, constitute the main reasons for this problem. This conflict in Cyprus, which has been going on for years, both increases the instability in the region and offers a potential opportunity to ignite a hot conflict.
Rumors have been circulating for some time that there has been a change in the US attitude towards the Cyprus problem. According to some analysts, the Biden administration is taking a more active role in this issue and trying to contribute to the solution. The basis of these claims is the recent statements of the US State Department and the support of the Republic of Cyprus in its efforts to be recognized by the Western Bloc.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement last month that they „play a supportive role in the recognition of the Republic of Cyprus on international platforms“. This statement was interpreted as the US administration showing more interest in the Cyprus Problem or that it could mediate in the negotiations between the parties. However, it is not yet clear how concrete these explanations mean.
Although the attitude of the USA regarding the Cyprus problem points to some changes, it can be said that there has not been a radical transformation. Throughout history, it has been observed that the USA did not follow a stable stance in its Cyprus policy. While it played an active role for a solution on the island during the Obama era, it remained in the background during the Trump era.
In conclusion, it can be said that the evaluations about the US’s attitude towards the Cyprus problem are too early to reach a clear conclusion. However, although the Biden administration seems to focus more on the Cyprus problem, it remains unclear whether there will be a radical change in the US policy on Cyprus.
