Introduction of Project Testing Adaptation of 17 Types of Grains in Trial Plots
A promotion event for 17 different grain varieties was held in Alaniçi, North Cyprus, showcasing silage, bread, durum wheat and six types of barley. The project, sponsored by Creditwest Bank and implemented by the Cyprus Turkish Farmers Association, was the first adaptation project of its kind undertaken by the Farmers Union. The event’s speakers highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture in the face of global warming, with the Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources emphasising the need for effective planning against drought and water scarcity. The full implementation of the project is expected to reduce the need for annual imports of bread wheat by 50,000 tonnes and save an estimated 1 billion TL in barley production costs. In his speech, President Ersin Tatar stressed the importance of domestic production, citing the registration of „Reşat Bey“ barley and the need to preserve fertile land for future generations.
