Turkish Billiards team comes second in the European Championship
The Turkish Nationals finished runners-up in the European Billiards Championship 3-cushion final held in Belek Tourism Center in Serik district of Antalya. Gulsen Degener and Guzin Mujde Karakaşlı managed to beat Denmark in the semi-finals and make their way to the final. Gülşen Degener defeated her Danish opponent Charlotte Sorensen 30-28 in the semi-finals, and Güzin Müjde Karakaşlı defeated Nana Petersen 28-21 in the semi-finals and became the opponent of the Dutch National Team, consisting of Therese Klompenhouwer and Monique Van Exter in the final.
At the finals, Değiner lost 30-17 to Dutch rival Therese Klompenhouwer; Güzin Müjde Karakaşlı defeated Monique Van Exter 30-26. The Nationals lost to the Netherlands 12-8 in the ‚Scotch Doubles‘ and became the owner of the silver medal.
“This was the first-ever Women’s European Championship. He would have liked the championship to come to our country. The match was in the middle, the excitement was at its peak. Let’s just say it wasn’t luck.“ said Değiner.
Talking about women’s billiards in Turkey, Değiner said, “As someone who pioneered women’s billiards, the place where he is now is still not a place we want. If a little more value is given, if a little more young people are supported more, I am sure they will come to much better places. I think the marketing side of this should be done better.” said the athlete.
In his statement, the national athlete Karakaşlı said, “This experience is not something we have experienced before. Frankly, we tried to put forward a good character. We never stopped fighting until this match. This is the characteristic of Turkish billiards. We hoped it went better. „We wanted a gold medal, but we promise to do our best for the next ones,“ he said.
Karakaşlı stated that they want to be heard more in order to be inspired and said, “As two athletes who have brought many medals to our country in Europe and the world; We want to be heard more in order to be an inspiration to be an example. I am sure that many talented girls will also start playing billiards and be very successful.”
