Kütahya’s Archaeological Museum Exhibits the Temple of Zeus
Zekeriya Ünal, the Director of Culture and Tourism of the province, stated that it is the best-preserved temple in Anatolia. He said that the excavations in the ancient city where Kütahya Dumlupınar University (DPU) is located were carried out with the support of the Presidency, the Governor’s Office, and sponsor companies.
Ünal explained that the Kütahya Archaeological Museum mainly exhibits works that shed light on the Roman era and continued as follows:
„Our museum contains approximately 1500 artifacts. Many of these artifacts were recorded in the inventory of the excavations in the ancient city of Aizanoi and are worthy of exhibition. The works carried out in Penkalas (Kocaçay) and Agora (Bazaar) in Aizanoi and the artifacts found here are part of Aizanoi’s work. This once again emphasizes how important it is for us. The artifacts excavated here have strengthened our belief that more works will be found.“
„THE STRONGEST AMAZON SARCOPHAGI ARE FOUND IN KÜTAHYA“
Ünal explained that one of the newest and most important works exhibited in the museum is the marble sundial with a lion claw motif, which was unearthed last year during excavations. Ünal provided information about the Amazon sarcophagus and said:
„This sarcophagus, which was found in 1990 and crafted with magnificent skill, belongs to Claudius Sebenno and Berekenike, the rulers of Aizanoi, and prominent families of the ancient city. His name is written on the lid of the sarcophagus. It is known that there are still 20 more Amazon sarcophagi in the world. However, the Amazon sarcophagus found in Kütahya is renowned worldwide. We consider the fact that the strongest sarcophagus from over 160 years ago was found in Kütahya as an important value in terms of tourism and archaeology.“
Zekeriya Ünal added that they plan to exhibit more artifacts in the new Archaeological Museum, which is planned to be completed next year.
